Art Therapy

Art Therapy Access Program
Through repeated museum visits, young people explore emotions, build confidence and find new ways to express themselves. Small groups spend time in the galleries and make art with a Registered and Board-Certified Art Therapist.
What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy uses artmaking, guided by a trained art therapist, to help people express and understand feelings, process experiences and develop coping skills.
The focus is on the creative process, not artistic ability or the finished work.

Built Through Partnership
MAM develops each series with a community organization around the needs of the young people it serves. Current partners include JIFF and PURE Academy.
The museum has worked with JIFF since 2017. In 2026, the partnership was named Mentoring Partnership of the Year by the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation.
Look, Make, and Share

Look Closely
Participants spend time with works of art, using close looking and conversation to explore a theme.

Create Freely
In the studio, participants experiment with color, shape and different materials. No art experience is needed.

Share Expression
Participants decide how much they want to share. Each series concludes with an exhibition for families, mentors and invited guests.
