Frozen in Motion

November 2022 through January 2023

In partnership with Creative Aging Memphis, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art hosted a sculpture workshop for senior adults to exercise their creativity, explore new artmaking processes, and create their own three-dimensional artwork. Led by teaching artist Sarah Nowlin, students in the six-week class made both gesture drawings and sculpture, working with the theme of “movement.” The students created their sculptures using cardboard, wire, foil, and masking tape. They were then covered in layers of paper mache clay and either painted, decoupaged, or left bare. From Elvis, to birds, to sea creatures, and more, each sculpture is a unique depiction of “movement.”
